A Litany for the Gulf of Mexico in a time of crisis

Upcoming Events during the weeks of July 25-August 8

  • Classes for all ages are offered at 11:10 a.m. each Sunday morning. Learn more.
  • A School Supply Drive for Carnes Elementary will be held July 25-August 8. Here’s a shopping list: spiral notebooks, pencils, crayons, safety scissors, glue sticks, Kleenex, backpacks, and uniforms (khaki, black, or navy shorts or slacks and white or navy polo tops for boys and girls sizes 5-11). The school resource center also needs underwear in smaller sizes. Supplies may be left on the second floor underneath the Community Service bulletin board. Also, please remember Calvary’s ongoing Box Tops for Education collection for Carnes. Box Top coupons may be left in the collection box on the Community Service table on
    the second floor.
  • The Calvary Book Group will meet on Tuesday, July 27 to discuss Made for Goodness and why this makes all the difference by Desmond Tutu and his daughter Mpho Tutu. Lisa & Tim DiScenza will host this gathering that will begin at their home at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome!
  • A Wednesday morning Eucharist is celebrated at Calvary each Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. in the Church. A light breakfast follows in the Library.
  • The Stop Hunger Now Food Packing Event for Haiti will be held at Church of the Holy Communion, 4645 Walnut Grove Rd., on July 30-31. Shifts are Friday afternoon (3:00-6:00 p.m.), Saturday afternoon (1:00-4:00 p.m.). Come help the West Tennessee Haiti Partnership pack  nutritious meals for children and others who were affected by the earthquake on January 12.   • A First Sunday Brunch will be offered on Sunday, August 1, beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the Mural Room. Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children 12 and under, and a family maximum of $30.
  • Sunday Singing- The next gathering for paper-less “Sunday singing”
    at the MacBeths’ home will be on Sunday, August 1, at 5:00 p.m. This one-hour session is open to anyone who would like to learn some simple new ways to praise the Lord!
  • A reception honoring Andy & Sybil MacBeth and their many contributions to Calvary will be held in the Great Hall following the 10:00 a.m. worship service on Sunday, August 8.

Plan Ahead for These Special Events:

  • Acolyte Training- Young people in grades 7-12 and all interested adults are invited to participate in an acolyte training in August. Training for beginners and experienced acolytes is planned for Saturday, August 14 and Saturday, August 21 from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. for 7th, 8th, and 9th grades and from 10:30 a.m. - Noon for 10th, 11th, and 12th grades and adults. All beginners, regardless of age, should come to the early session both weeks.
  • Festival of Ministries-Following the final combined 10:00 a.m. service of the summer schedule on Sunday, August 15, representatives from the many parish fellowship, service, and worship ministries will set up display tables in the Great Hall to inform parishioners about the specifics of their ministries and to recruit new participants. Each booth at the festival represents a possible “doorway,” an opportunity to participate, contribute, or receive. Mark your calendar now to come find your place.
  • Parish Picnic- The annual parish picnic will be held on Sunday, August 15, at the Ornamental Metal Museum from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans, and brownies will be
    served. An inflatable slide and two bouncies will be available for kids of all ages. The cost is $4 for children, $7 for adults and $25 for families. Come enjoy the beautiful Mississippi River and the fellowship of Calvary Church.
  • Koinonia, Calvary’s Wednesday evening program, resumes on Wednesday, August 18, with dinner, worship, adult classes, and Calvary Ringers, Children’s Choir, and Parish Choir Rehearsals.
  • The three-service worship schedule resumes on Sunday, August 22 (7:45, 9:00 with Children’s Chapel, & 11:15 a.m. Services; 10:15 a.m. Classes).
