Youth Ministries at Calvary Church
Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. (I Timothy 4:12)
In addition to Sunday morning education classes, youth in grades 6-12 have many opportunities to participate in the life of the church. Teens serve an integral role as acolytes, lectors, and Eucharistic Ministers in the 9:00 and 11:15 a.m. services on Sunday mornings.
Other opportunities for Episcopal youth include participating in the Diocesan Youth Council (DYC) events; being a part of the Happening community in West Tennessee, a spiritual retreat experience for teens; and going to various camps, retreats, and mission trips.

Every Wednesday Night
6:30-8pm
Grades 9-12
The Alternative is a church service at Church of the Holy Communion aimed at giving youth a different and more comfortable way to worship. We all are in many different stages of our own faith development and this unique service aims to meet anyone regardless of where they are on their own journey. The Alternative is held in Quilling Chapel on Wednesday nights. The service is filled with contemporary Christian music, prayers from the Book of Common Prayer, the previous week's Revised Common Lectionary reading, and a homily, given by a senior in high school.
Diocesan Youth Council (DYC)
DYC is an organization comprised primarily of students whose mission is to sponsor youth events
throughout the Diocese of West Tennessee. This
includes Bishop's Bash, the Feast of Lights, Junior High Spring Fling, and Happening. Many of Calvary's youth are active participants and several serve on the council.
J2A, Journey to Adulthood, is a complete youth ministry program of spiritual formation for 6th-12th grades.
It uses Bible study, prayer, rites of passage, outreach ministries and both serious and playful activities to underscore its core principles:
1) Manhood and womanhood are free gifts from God.
2) Adulthood must be earned.
There are three two-year segments of the program:
Rite-13: The first two years (6th & 7th graders) focus on celebrating the individuality of each young person and their creative potential. The Rite-13 liturgy (A celebration of Manhood and Womanhood) is the community expression of this.
J2A: The middle portion of the program (8th & 9th graders), engages youth with the skills and critical thinking involved in adulthood. The youth plan and embark on a pilgrimage together at the end of this segment.
YAC: A mentor-based program helping older teens (10th-12th grade) to discern and carry out a ministry within their church or in the larger community. Vocation and development of a personal credo are also emphasized.
Grades 10-12/Room 301
YAC (Young Adults in Church)
Grades 8 & 9/Room 302
J2A ( Journey to Adulthood)
In both YAC and J2A, 8-12 graders explore the stories from our Lectionary and see and hear how people have interpreted them throughout history-through art, music, poetry, and film. Our teachers provide an interactive way for young people to understand the story of God in a way that speaks and relates to them. After the lesson, the young people will split into their respective age groups and discuss/do an actvity that helps them to find the Gospel relevant in their lives.
Grades 6 & 7/Bethlehem Chapel
Genesis
Using the Rock Solid curriculum, this class focuses on building relationships through prayer, scripture, the Holy Spirit, and a Christian Covenant among
its members. It is biblically based and church-year related, and includes experiential faith-building activities to connect learning to their everyday lives.
